DSDN104_project3
DSDN 104 project 3.
For my developments i drew up rough sketches of what I could possibly create and transfer into a 3ds max model, I drew different ideas and from these created a model using the digital programs. With my digital models I started with a simple spin top design like the one in my sketches and altered them using different modifiers. After creating several models I chose 3 for my my final render and 1 to make into my physical model.

These are my final images, i tried to capture the essence of my spin top, i photogrphed it spinning and also a close up to get a beteer idea of the detail.
Precedents
For my precedent images i chose numerous images of spin tops, 3d printed model images, some sculptures and my final photo from my last project. I wanted to use the spin tops as precedents to base my 3d print model from but use there simple forms to re-create the toy and add more dimensions to it and create something that only a 3d printer could, and with the use of the sculpture as a precedent for colour options to get an idea of what a form could look like in matte black colouring and i also gauged how i could use the lighting for my final photo from this.

The diagram and the joint.
My technical drawing of the elbow. Using the hinge motion of the joint as well as the twisting, double jointed motion. Also darkened lines represent where the limit and more important aspects of the joint.
Pysical model photos
These are my Pysical models, made with acrylic, clear elastic and thread. Representing the elbow joints movements .
The elbow
For my joint i got assigned the elbow. The elbow is the region surrounding the the elbow joint. Three bones form the the elbow joint which link the upper arm with the radius and ulnar bones of the forearm.
Two main movements are possible with the elbow, the hinge like bending and straightening(flexion and extension) between the humerus and ulna and the complex action of turning the forearm over (pronation), this happens at the articulation between the radius and the ulna. The hinge only moves in one plane. I represented this in my model by making three different acrylic pieces. One to represent the plane that cannot move and also represents the limits of the elbow joint movement. The second is the elbow joint itself, I tried to best manipulate the acrylic with a heat gun to shape it into my best representation of the elbow joint and how it looks. The third is representive of the ulna and radius bones, by attaching them with elastic and thread to the elbow joint and plane it can twist in a motion like that of the turning of the forearm, more colloquially referred to as double jointed. As the models shows these movements are limited just like the joint limitations themselves caused by the ligaments and tendons as well as the shape of the bones.. I used acrylic because i thought it was the best material to use to create a form from my ideas and with the ability of being able to melt it to change its shape and form it worked really well. The elastic and thread also represent the tendons and ligaments within the elbow joint.

DSDN101_project3_Standpoint
My viewpoint.
BMX innovation..
BMX innovation..
My passion is bicycles, I want to show through a short stop motion film how recent innovations in bicycle and in particular BMX design has evolved and allowed us to use the bicycle in new and innovative ways, relating it to the phrase of our project “a new way of seeing”. My standpoint is “through industrial design innovations we can alter perceptions and expand the possibilities to create a new way of seeing”.
As Hugh Herman said “truly, the bicycle is the most influential piece of product design ever”[1]
Using these inspirations I want to make my film showing firstly how important of an innovation the bicycle is in today’s society, its positive impacts on us and our environment. Through showing various photos of myself riding my BMX I want to show the viewer that with this product we can not only create happiness, excitement and danger all within it being beneficial for our health and fitness, and our environment but show how it has created a new way of seeing for not only the rider but also the public and how there perceptions can change by viewing but also there way of seeing can change when riding a bicycle.
Through showing myself riding my BMX on a typical ride to my local skate park I want to show that through the evolution of bicycle design and how it has progressed to what is now possible on modern day BMX bikes. I also want to use different camera angles to show these designs and parts on the bike that have changed to allow us to do so…. Thus creating a new way of seeing.

Inspiration/precedents.
This stop motion video was made by my boss in his 3rd year studying media at polytechnic, i liked the different approach he took in using drawings of each individual frame to make the video different and feel more creative. There are some aspects of this video that could help in mine like the different camera angles and the sense of freedom i feel this video shows.
DSDN_101_project3_group/work
Group work. Brainstorming.
Group mind map..
To start the project we were asked to form group with fellow students who are also studying the similar design field i have chosen, which for me was design. We made a quick mind map jotting down what industrial design means to us and what we feel its main purposes are.
Group brainstorm...
We then narrowed down our ideas and were asked to present a quick presentation based on what we felt industrial design mean to us and had to explain it through an image composed on an a3 sheet of paper.
